Spartan’s Los Angeles Area Campus offers both an FAA approved Diploma and an Associate of Occupational Studies Degree preparing students for A&P Certification.

A&P Technicians keep airplanes in safe flying condition. They are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and work for airlines, aircraft manufacturers, general aviation companies, aerospace, as well as the U.S. government. In addition, some non-aviation related industries employ A&P Certified Technicians due to their high level of precision training and familiarity with systems such as hydraulics. These industries include but are not limited to automotive, manufacturing, wind energy and amusement parks, among others 

Airframe and Powerplant Diploma

Associate of Occupational Studies Aviation Maintenance Technology

If you have already successfully completed the Airframe and Powerplant Diploma Program,

this course is simply an add-on of 6 more classes and 15 additional weeks.


 If you have already trained in or worked in a position that is relevant to our training program you may qualify for transferability of credits or you may only need to take a portion of the program before being qualified to test for your A&P certification.  If you believe that the positions or training you received in the military or on the job may qualify you for this, be sure to speak with one our representatives who can conduct an assessment of your experience.  Below are the descriptions of the program if you only need certain portions.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The 17.5-month long Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) program is divided into 14 units of instruction:

  • 3 general units
  • 5 airframe units
  • 5 powerplant units
  • 1 inspection and review unit

Each unit of instruction:

Lasts five weeks

Covers a specific area of aircraft maintenance and repair

Represents 150 clock hours of instruction for a total of 2100 clock hours of training

Classroom lecture, discussions, and hands-on training – including the completion of individual projects – are all utilized to enhance student education and training.

The 22-month long Associate of Occupational Studies Aviation Maintenance Technology Degree is comprised of the existing diploma program listed above as well as the following:

6 General Education Classes totaling 15 weeks and 24 units. Each term is 5 weeks and students take 2 classes per term

OCCUPATIONAL DESCRIPTIONS

Airframe and Powerplant Technicians are primarily responsible for keeping aircrafts safe while flying and are certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A graduate from Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology is qualified to sit for the FAA A&P exam, and upon successful completion of the exam, is qualified for any entry-level Airframe and Powerplant position in the aviation industry.

Students gain theoretical knowledge that covers:

  • Aviation regulations
  • Flight-control systems
  • Aircraft communication systems
  • Powerplant systems
  • Aircraft engines

Using state of the art technology, Airframe and Powerplant Technicians diagnose, maintain, and repair aeronautical systems and engines.

A technician's range of work can vary from jets to propeller driven airplanes to helicopters. Some find their niche by specializing in a specific area of the aircraft, such as the engine, electrical systems, or hydraulics.

Powerplant Technicians have the authority to service and repair engines, as well as perform some work on propellers.

Airframe Technicians have the authority to do any work on the plane, with the exception of working on instruments, powerplants, and propellers.

Airframe and Powerplant Technicians have the authority to work on every part of the aircraft, with the exception of instruments.
