An Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) performs routine and preventative maintenance on aircraft. AMT’s repair and overhaul aircraft components following stringent regulations set forth by the FAA. This includes a multitude of tasks on both fixed wing airplanes and rotorcraft. These tasks include but are not limited to the structure of the aircraft, the internal system in the aircraft as well as maintenance to aircraft engines and their related systems.

The Airframe & Powerplant and Aviation Maintenance Technology programs are approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and meet the requirements established in Title 14, Part 147. The programs are designed to teach students entry-level technical skills in airframe and powerplant.
Successful completion qualifies the graduates to take the written, oral and practical tests with the Federal Aviation Administration for the Mechanic’s Certificate with both Airframe and Powerplant Ratings. The skills and information taught are not only relevant in the aviation industry but also applicable to other maintenance industries, such as: Automotive and Diesel, Heavy Equipment, Power and Light, and Industrial Technology. The general education courses in the associate degree program enhance the students’ background and intellectual proficiency.

Sample Classes
In this class students will discuss and apply and overhaul procedures and techniques as they apply to an aircraft reciprocating engine. Student will inspect and repair engine components in accordance with manufacturers generally accepted procedures. Students will also discuss engine exhaust systems, and engine cooling systems.
In this course, students learn aircraft structures, techniques of sheet metal repair using proper tools, parts layout, and forming and bending aluminum materials.
In this course, students learn how to service, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic and pneumatic systems and components. Inspection and repair of landing gear and aircraft electrical systems complete this block of study.

Well, Aviation Maintenance Technology and Airframe & Powerplant programs are essentially the same, but one is a diploma and one is an associate’s degree. They both lead to eligibility for the certification process with the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) for the Airframe & Powerplant certificate.

You’ll explore aviation maintenance and the technologies associated with it including everything from fuel metering and propellers to aircraft instrumentation. Plus, you’ll get familiar with small single engine planes to large transport planes used at major airlines.

Students training in our diploma program only take one general education course. Students earning their associate’s degree study in seven general education courses. Due to program changes, the exact number of courses may change.
While our campuses have set schedules, most students find the schedule fits well with their busy lifestyle. Also, you typically will be either in the day or evening.

The certification process is included in your cost of tuition, for one test attempt, if you take the exams within 45 days of graduation. In total it requires three written exams, four general Airframe & Powerplant exams, and an oral and practical exam with an FAA designated examiner.
