Today’s aircraft contain incredibly sophisticated electronic equipment. In addition to radar, you may find anti-collision systems, weather detection systems, sophisticated communications, GPS tracking systems, and more. The failure of any one of these systems could put pilots and passengers at risk. Trained avionics technicians are needed to install, maintain, and repair important electronic components.   If you’re technically-minded and like working with your hands, you might want to consider pursuing a career in avionics. Begin by training with an FAA-approved school that teaches avionics maintenance. This guide, presented by Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology, gives you an overview of the skills and concepts you can learn in an avionics maintenance school.   General Education The greatest technical talent isn’t worth much without an ability to communicate and reason. When human body parts malfunction, it’s time to see a doctor. When mechanical parts malfunction, it’s time to visit a non-destructive testing technician. Non-destructive testing (NDT) is the process of analysing and testing materials, machinery, and components without affecting their functionality. NDT is used across most types of manufacturing and engineering, including the transportation industry. Some NDT methods are even used in the restoration of works of art, or to establish authenticity. NDT is especially important to the aviation industry, where parts and machinery need regular inspection for safety. NDT is a potentially interesting career path for mathematically-minded people who enjoy investigating problems and solving puzzles. Erickson Air-Crane builds heavy-duty helicopters for logging, fire-fighting, and heavy load construction. The company began in 1971, when a second-generation logger called Jack Erickson saw the potential for aircraft in timber harvesting. He leased a Sikorsky Aircraft S-64E Skycrane helicopter and changed the name of his family business, Erickson Lumber Company, to Erickson Skycrane. He developed a system of accessories and systems that made using helicopters for timber harvesting consistently profitable. Today, the Erickson Air-Crane is the only purpose-built sky crane in existence. Erickson Air-Cranes have gained a reputation in the logging industry as superior tools for efficient, economical, and ecologically sensitive harvesting. They have also been used for firefighting, power line construction, and in renovating the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. The company has its headquarters in Oregon, with global presences in Canada, Malaysia, and Florence, Italy. Erickson Air-Crane will be interviewing at Spartan College July 29th and 30th. To learn more about the company, go to www.ericksonaircrane.com. To sign on for an interview, please visit the Career Center!
