Spartan’s Historical Timeline

Spartan College has a rich history.


The below outlines some of our aviation college’s more historic events.

 

  • 1928 – Spartan School of Aeronautics was founded September 27, 1928, by W.G. Skelly, President of Skelly Oil Company. He established Spartan Aircraft Company and formed the corporation that built Tulsa Municipal Airport (now called Tulsa International Airport).
  • 1942 – Spartan was acquired by J. Paul Getty who was responsible for much of the school’s growth during World War II and the Korean war where thousands of pilots and mechanics trained for the armed forces.
  • 1968 – The school was purchased by Automation Industries Inc.
  • 1969 – Spartan builds its south campus on Pine street.
  • 1971 – Spartan became a subsidiary of National Education Corporation.
  • 1997 – National Education Corporation became a subsidiary of Harcourt General Corporation.
  • 2004 –  Spartan School of Aeronautics changed its name to Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology to reflect the diversity of programs that can train students in disciplines other than aviation.
  • Present Day – Spartan is currently a wholly owned subsidiary of Spartan Aviation Industries, Inc.
